802.11b Wireless Network Cards Options

by Hanz Makmur - LCSR Computing Facility - modified: Aug 3, 2001

The wireless ethernet connection used by RU LAWN system is based on the IEEE 802.11b standard. In order to access LAWN system you will need a wireless card that supports that standard. These cards nominally have 11Mb/s bandwidth, but the actual throughput varies from 2Mb/s up to 11Mb/s, depending on the communication signal strength. To increase your signal strength, we recommend an external antenna ($76). Our test shows that this external antenna increases signal strength by 3-10dB depending on your location. If you are interested at higher end external Antennas which have longer reach, see: Hyperlink Tech.

The following is a list a few cards that will work with our wireless network. You can purchase these card from many on-line mail order companies such as computers4sure.com, warehouse.com, buy.com or other places that sell computer networking products.
