This document will show you how to create a document to a Postscript document. This is a requirement before a document can be converted to a PDF format. See Converting Postscript Document to PDF using Adobe Acrobat Distiller for more details.
These instructions assume you are using an MS Windows 2000 or newer system. There will be some minor variation in the details when using Windows 98 or Windows XP but the concepts are the same.
To create a postscript file, you must have a postscript printer driver set up on your system. If you donŐt have a postscript printer set up already, you should set one up. See: Setting Up a Postscript Printer Queue to Print to DCIS Printers for more details.

Figure.1
1. To print to file the step is similar to printing. In whatever program you are using, you
simply go to the File menu and select Print
as shown in figure 1.

Figure 2.
2. A print window like the one shown in figure 2 below will open. Make sure you check the Print to File check box and choose a Postscript printer.A Postscript printer normally have a type with PS or Postscript in the name. Click OK to continue.
Figure 3.
3. A window shown in figure 3 will open asking you where to
save the output file. Locate your destination folder, make sure that you
set the type as All Files (*.*),
and name the output file. In this example we named it myfile.ps.
Note: Because we are using a Postscript printer driver, the output file thus created will automatically be a postscript file. However the default name will always have a .PRN extension. To avoid confusion and to ease conversion to a PDF file later, you should make sure that the file has a .PS extension by setting up the type of the file as All Files (*.*) and naming it with .ps extension.
4. Click OK to create the file.
This concludes the instruction on how to print to a PS file. If you have more questions, please contact the DCIS Help Desk at http://please.rutgers.edu/help
