As part of the constant changes in our lives,ie: graduation, changing schools, work, account closing, etc., some users will want to have his/her DCS mail moved to a new server elsewhere. This document will describe the steps needed to completely extract a user's current email from CS Central Mail Server to a non CS IMAP mail server.
Please note that this extraction tool requires that you have a
plain IMAP based server running at your new location. We do not
support SSL IMAP for this extraction process. We also do not use POP3
protocol since POP3 does not store email centrally on a server.
Due to a limitation with many IMAP Server, make sure that you are NOT currently mixing email and folders. If you have mixed email and folder in a folder, make sure that your new IMAP server can handle mixed email and folder, otherwise you will get an error like: "bCREATE NO Mailbox doesn't allow inferior mailboxes". If you are moving from a mixed email and folder to a server that does NOT support this feature, you will need to rearrange all your mail folders so that there are no mix of folders and email in your folder structure.
Extraction Process. To start the extraction process go to the extraction website http://dragon.rutgers.edu/cgi-bin/depart.pl ![]() The page will ask you for your current CS Mail account username and password, the name of your new mail server (example: lecture123.com) and the name of the folder or directory to store the extracted mail into, (Example: Mail), the username and password of the new mail account on the new server. Let's get started: Step 1: Enter your current mail server username and password Step 2: Enter the name of your new IMAP mail server Step 3: Select folder to store your extracted mail to, Step 4: Enter your new mail server username and password and Step 5: click the Go button to start the mail extraction process.
Pressing the Go! button will queue your extraction request into
the system and it will start the extraction process immediately.
Depending on the size of your current mail files, this process may
take a few seconds to a few minutes. At the completion of the
migration process, you will received an email message on the destination server describing the status of the extraction. |
