Recommended Software for your Mac When Connecting from Home
Network Drivers
To connect to RUNet, you need to have additonal network drivers
installed in addition to MacTCP for System 7.1 or above users or Open Transport for System 7.5 users. There are two ways to establishes a TCP/IP connection. One way is thru SLIP and the other is thru PPP.
Known versions of SLIP drivers for Macintosh are InterSLIP (freeware),
VersaTermSLIP (comercial) and MacSLIP (comercial). Known version of PPP drivers are Free PPP (freeware) and InterPPP (comercial).

Note:You must present your ID to get a copy of MacTCP. MacTCP is licensed for Rutgers University Users only.
- Open Transport can be obtained directly from Apple Developer World
- InterSLIP is available on the Internet from
InterCon Systems

- Rutgers Internet Starter Set which is a complete set of instruction and PPP software, telnet, ftp and some utility that get you started using PPP on a Mac fast. Does not include MacTCP or OpenTransport. (RU Only access)

Terminal Emulation
Kermit
was a popular communication software on a mac. It is old and may not
work with present System software. Use of terminal software that
comes with your modem is recommeded. Modem manufactures normally
include such terminal emulation software like Microphone Lite or zterm. You do not need MacTCP or any SLIP or PPP software to use the above programs.
Telnet is used for terminal emulation. The most popular one of all is
NCSA Telnet and Comet.
Mail Readers
WebMail A mail reader that uses WWW browser such as Netscape to read and send mail. This program works on any platform that has WWW Browser. Advantages: No need to get other software, full MIME support and does not need more memory to run.
Eudora, commonly used POP Based mail reader on a Mac.
Other mail readers are also available.
News Readers
News Watcher and InterNews are commonly used NNTP based newsreader on a mac.

File Transfer Tools
Fetch, Anarchie are the most commonly used software for searching and transfering files.
WWW Browser
Netscape
is a complete WWW browser with additional ability to read/post news and send mail as well as ftp. If combined with a program called WebMail, Netscape also allows user to read mail from a POP Mail server.
